CampNow: The Sydney startup delivering camping gear to your doorstep

Aussies like to camp. Whether we do it to spend some quality time in the great outdoors or if we simply need somewhere to crash after a festival, camping has become a large part of the Australian culture. But let’s get one thing straight; this pastime is no picnic when not prepared.

Do you have a tent available? How about a blow-up mattress? How do you plan on blowing up said mattress? Are you planning on taking some camping chairs? How will you be cooking your food? The list goes on.

This is where CampNow comes in. The Sydney-based startup lets you hire all the camping equipment you need as well as having it delivered right to your door.

“I was living in Bondi and after a tough week at work, I felt the urge to go somewhere different and get out of the Bondi bubble,” says co-founder Daniel Courtnall. “I wanted to go camping, but not being a frequent camper, I didn’t have any camping gear at hand.”

It was through the lack of time or money to buy new equipment that Daniel thought; “Wouldn’t it be great if someone delivered me all the gear I needed!” And here lies the startup’s ahuh moment.

Courtnall along with his co-founder, Nick Longworth, then went on to design three easy packages that differ depending on the adventure you seek.

“The packages include our ‘Festival Package’, the ‘Want More Package’ and the ‘Take The Kids Package’,” explains Courtnall. “There’s no need for storage or cleaning on your end, not to mention the money you save from not buying equipment that you’ll most likely only use a few times a year!”

Before launching in late 2015, both Courtnall and Longworth spent six months preparing.

“We came up with a good name that was both available and suitable,” says Courtnall. “We spent time defining our target market, as well as interviewing and surveying people - both experienced campers and people who'd never been before. I spent weeks designing our website, plus organising insurance, legals and trademarking.”

What CampNow has come to understand is that more and more people are wanting things to be simplified and to be available almost immediately.

“Our goal is to make going on adventures hassle free for people,” explains Courtnall. “We want to make camping as easy as booking an Uber or ordering from Dominos.”

And it is through this casual and carefree business motto that CampNow is really starting to resonate with their customers.
