Travelling for work can sometimes sound more fun that it actually is. Here’s our pick of five essential apps to help make the experience easier and that little more enjoyable when you’re working on the fly.

HotelTonight

Need to find somewhere to stay fast? This free mobile-only app is handy for booking hotels at the last minute, and stands out from the many others offering similar services because of its ease of use and reduced rates.

Choose from a curated selection of hotels categorised under basic, crash pad, solid, luxe or hip, from tonight up to seven days out. Three taps and ten seconds later and your room is booked.

TripIt

Keep all your travel plans in one place with TripIt. Their basic app is free and pulls together everything you need – flights, hotels, meetings, restaurant reservations, car rentals and more – into a master itinerary. All you need to do is forward related docs to their email. It also syncs plans with your calendar of choice – both online and on your mobile – and let’s you share them with others via text, email or social media.

Whether it’s a conference highlight, a team shot or a celebrity spotting, Touchnote is a free app that let’s you share travel moments while you’re on the move.

Gogobot

A free travel app that helps you find places to eat, play and stay in cities around the world. Gogobot users can search by ‘tribes’ that best relate to their travel scenario and style; for example, business travellers, budget travellers, art and design lovers, foodies, trendsters and more.

Each listing also features ratings, as reviewed by different tribes. That way a restaurant that may not be a hit with students and budget travellers, but is with the business and luxury tribes is ranked accordingly.

XE Currency

Are you heading overseas for work? Then the free XE Currency app is an essential app for calculating currencies on the go. It features live exchange rates for all 180+ world currencies, and a calculator for converting prices in a flash.

Touchnote

Whether it’s a conference highlight, a team shot or a celebrity spotting, Touchnote is a free app that let’s you share travel moments while you’re on the move. Snap a photo from your phone, add a personalised message and then send it on to be printed (as a postcard or greeting card) and posted to the recipient of your choice.

What apps do you consider essential when travelling for work?
